The former city mayor described Berlin as “poor and sexy”. Graffiti and street art just fit right into this slogan and we love this city!

The birth of Berlin’s street art scene can be traced back to 1961 when the Soviet Union erected the Berlin wall, separating East Germany from West Germany. Due to the symbolic significance of the wall as a divisive medium, it became the obvious place for the artists of Berlin to express their opinions and frustrations. In addition the wall was an eyesore that the artists of Berlin felt compelled to do something about. During the Cold War, the West side of the Berlin wall was completely covered in graffiti and paintings. The East side of the wall however, remained blank due to it being inaccessible. When the wall fell in 1989, new art soon appeared on the Eastern side of wall as the blank canvas became a great venue to express political and cultural ideas in paint

Today, the streets of Berlin boast some of the best street art in the world. Street artists, muralists and graffiti painters from around the globe have created amazing art pieces on abandoned walls of the city. You can find work by street artist including Roa, Herakut, JR, Tim Niall-Harris, Os Gêmeos, and many more. happy hunting
